Understanding Depression
Depression, also known as major depressive disorder, is a medical illness that negatively impacts your feelings, thoughts, and actions. It is characterized by a persistent feeling of sadness and a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. This condition can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at work and at home.
Common Symptoms of Depression
-
Persistent sad, anxious, or 'empty' mood.
-
Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities.
-
Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness.
-
Changes in appetite or weight and significant sleep disturbances.
-
Fatigue, decreased energy, or difficulty concentrating.
What Causes Depression?
The exact cause of depression is not fully understood, but it often results from a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Brain chemistry, family history, major life changes, trauma, and stress can all contribute to its onset. It is important to recognize that depression is a complex illness, not a sign of personal weakness.
How We Treat Depression
-
Medication Management:
Antidepressants and other psychiatric medications may be considered when appropriate. Treatment includes ongoing monitoring of your response, side effects, and progress, with adjustments made as needed. -
Spravato® Treatment:
For adults with treatment resistant depression who have not experienced adequate improvement with previous antidepressant treatments, Spravato® may provide another treatment option. Spravato is administered in a supervised clinical setting and requires an evaluation to determine whether it is appropriate for you.
-
Integrative Psychiatry:
Your treatment may also consider sleep, nutrition, physical activity, stress, laboratory findings, and other lifestyle or biological factors that may influence your mental health. Targeted laboratory testing or supplementation may be incorporated when clinically appropriate. -
Psychotherapy and Collaborative Care:
Psychotherapy can be an important part of depression treatment. Although CopeWell does not provide therapy as a standalone service, supportive psychotherapy may be incorporated into psychiatric visits when appropriate. We may also collaborate with or refer you to a therapist for ongoing psychotherapy.
Who Is Treatment For?
Anyone experiencing persistent symptoms of depression that interfere with their daily life is a candidate for seeking help. If feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or emptiness last for more than two weeks, professional evaluation is recommended.
Individuals who have tried to manage their symptoms on their own without success can benefit from a structured treatment plan. Professional guidance provides new tools and perspectives that may not be accessible otherwise.
Treatment is suitable for those who are ready to actively participate in their own recovery. This includes being open to therapy, willing to discuss medication options if appropriate, and committed to making positive changes.
People seeking a comprehensive and personalized approach to mental wellness are good candidates. Effective treatment is not one-size-fits-all and should be tailored to your unique history, symptoms, and goals for the future.

Benefits of Professional Treatment
Improved Mood and Outlook
A primary outcome of successful treatment is a significant reduction in feelings of sadness and hopelessness. Patients often report a more stable mood and a renewed, more positive outlook on life.
Restored Interest and Enjoyment
Treatment helps you rediscover pleasure in activities and hobbies you once loved. This restoration of interest is a key indicator of recovery and improved quality of life.
Increased Energy and Focus
Depression often drains energy and makes it difficult to concentrate. Effective care can help alleviate this fatigue, leading to better focus at work or school and more energy for daily tasks.
Healthier Sleep Patterns
Many people with depression struggle with either insomnia or oversleeping. Treatment can help regulate your sleep cycle, leading to more restful nights and improved daytime alertness.
Stronger Relationships
By improving your mood and communication skills, treatment can help mend and strengthen your relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. It reduces irritability and social withdrawal associated with depression.
